Established as the county seat of Citrus County, Inverness is a beautiful community with all the charm of a small town, but with an air of sophistication about it. One of the most appealing aspects to the town is the historic downtown district. Recently renovated and landscaped, this area features numerous antique and specialty shops, as well as other businesses and local government offices. History buffs will enjoy the museum located within the circa 1912 Old Courthouse. Filled with memorabilia and other documents, this museum will take you back to the turn of the 20th century, and give you a glimpse into Inverness's past. | |
The Old Courthouse served as the main building for local government and commerce until the 1970s, when the county outgrew its county seat. The New Courthouse was then built, and remains the county's headquarters. The area's beautiful natural environment and abundance of shimmering lakes only enhance Inverness's peaceful atmosphere. Inverness is alive with plenty of recreational opportunities. Water sports are popular on Big Lake Henderson, one of 50 smaller lakes making up the Tsala Apopka Lake Chain. From water skiing to quiet bass fishing to peaceful sunbathing, this is the ideal place to enjoy nature's splendor. |
Golf is also a popular pastime in Citrus County. Within Inverness's city limits, Inverness Golf & Country Club and Lakeside Golf & Country Club provide challenging holes and interesting obstacles along the course. The rest of the county is also teeming with other such championship courses, including Citrus Hills Golf & Country Club, Twisted Oaks Golf & Country Club, El Diablo Golf & Country Club, Skyview, and more. The City of Inverness is alive with activity during the Great American Cooter Fest an annual festival in downtown Inverness. Here you can enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of Inverness and the lakefront park with real Cooter Turtles which the event is named for. |
The family oriented weekend consists of Cooter Races, and other fun and games for the kids as well as fireworks and great food. The annual 4th of July festival is another fun filled event with food, fun, music, and games for the entire family. Then after sunset there is a spectacular fireworks show over the lake. You can enjoy the show from your boat out on the lake or put down a blanket or chair in the park and just sit back. Either way it is a great ending to what is always a fun filled day. |
